San Diego has been in the public eye big time this past week thanks to the arrival of the prestigious US Open golf tournament at our beloved Torrey Pines. Weeks and weeks of preparation went into get the golf course looking camera ready, not to mention getting La Jolla prepped for the traffic, and I was lucky enough to see it all first-hand.

These days, golf pretty much equals Tiger. Every tournament preview, Nike ad, and PGA commercial features Tiger, and I think it is safe to say that no other golfer in history has ever caught the eye of a nation more than Tiger Woods. My first golf tournament experience started on Friday and I strategically placed myself in the bleachers of the 11th hole two hours before Tiger, Phil Mickleson and Adam Scott would come waltzing through.

As the hours passed, masses, no, more like mobs of people began to crowd around the tee box, fairway, and greens as the awesome threesome approached. The overcast weather seemed to deter no one from catching a glimpse of the man, the myth, the legend: Mr. Tiger Woods. When he finally approached the tee and proceeded to tee off, the crowd went wild. Home run at a Padres game wild. It was more noise then I ever expected to hear and once he was finished with hole 11, the mass of people mobbed its way over to the next hole.

After the mass vacated the area, I began to make my way across the course to the Trophy Club tent when, from a good 5 holes away, I heard another insane roar worthy only of Tiger himself. He had birdied 13 with an epic long putt that will be shown over and over again on Sportscenter this week. I finally made it back to my beautiful (and hard to get) suite at The Lodge at Torrey Pines with the satisfaction of knowing I saw (and heard) a historic athlete at the peak of his game in my beautiful hometown.

Anyone else lucky enough to attend the 2008 US Open at in San Diego at Torrey Pines?

With Memorial Day behind us, it’s safe to say it’s officially summer in San Diego. While the early June Gloom and sporadic rain drops may be currently interrupting our beach weekend plans, the weather is warming up and long beach days in the hot sun are just around the corner.

Summer may be the season of carefree fun, but before we get to that state of ease, we have some work to do. Let this blog be your source for summer-ready style - from your soft, bronze skin to your tight bikini clad body.

Get your body fit

It’s time to finally burn off the extra pounds you packed on over the winter holiday - and ignored straight through your New Year’s resolution and well into spring. San Diego’s newest downtown gym, FIT, is the absolute best spot to work out for your summer body. Check out the Padres game during an outdoor Yoga class, or stay inside and work up a sweat on your pick of new-age cardio machines.

Another great way to get in shape for summer is to find an outdoor walking or running track. I recommend the Mission Bay walk by the bay (way less crowded than the beachside board walk) as well as the downtown San Diego Harbor boardwalk, from Little Italy to Seaport Village. Here are some more ideas for outdoor San Diego walking trails.

Once you have a body to brag about, get yourself a hot bikini or one piece bathing suit. The San Diego bikinis I love this year are from Sauvage - a huge brand that just launched a new boutique on Prospect in La Jolla. They’re a bit pricey - but extremely flattering and stylish.

Get your skin soft and tan

No one wants to see dry, rough skin on the San Diego beaches. Head to one of the many great San Diego day spas for a hydrating body wrap or indulgent Vichy shower treatment. Spa services like these help to rejuvenate your skin with moisture while removing all toxins.

Other necessary summer-ready spa services are waxing - Bikini waxes for the ladies and chest and back waxes for the man - as well as massages to relax after your harsh summer-ready workouts at the gym. After your skin is refreshed, pick out one of the best tanning lotions and head to the beach, or stay inside and get a bronze base at one of the many tanning salons in San Diego. Get some help finding the best San Diego spas here.

Now, get to the beach

Once your body is tightened-up, softened-out and tanned (or tan-ready), head to one of the many beautiful beaches in San Diego. My favorite summer beach spots are in Del Mar and La Jolla - but there’s nothing wrong with a fun beach party down in Mission or Pacific Beach. This summer, leave the alcohol at home - or think of a good hiding spot - as the San Diego beach alcohol ban is in full effect. Keep up to date on California beach laws here.

Following the 2008 Solana Beach shark attack, it may be wise to keep a close eye on beach safety - from the water condition to the shark alerts and lifeguards on duty. Get an overview of recommended beach safety here.

The San Diego theater and arts community is a strong and innovative element within San Diego society. From the small, up-and-coming playhouses in El Cajon, North Park, and North County to the large, established theaters in La Jolla and Downtown, and the creative niche theaters and opera houses in Balboa Park – the entertainment offering of theater and arts in San Diego is abundant.

Prominent theaters in San Diego, such as La Jolla Playhouse and Civic Theater, have sent several new plays straight to Broadway. Although San Diego may seems worlds away from the snow-filled parks and raw, bold culture of New York – these two cities are forever connected through the magic of the stage.

The La Jolla Playhouse has brought the following plays to Broadway fame: Jersey Boys, Dracula, The Musical, I Am My Own Wife, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Dangerous Games, and more. It is a thrill to see a performance open on a San Diego stage, and then see the same production live onstage at Broadway months later. I always make sure to plan a trip to New York and buy Broadway tickets to these native San Diego shows.

San Diego is also well known for its array of opera houses. From the large San Diego Opera organization to the quaint San Diego Small Opera, locals that love dynamic opera performances are in luck in San Diego. From large to small, San Diego operas are full of excitement and intrigue.

The San Diego entertainment community finds great success in all areas of San Diego County. No matter where you live, you’re bound to be close to one of the fantastic playhouses or grand theaters in San Diego.

KPBS is recruiting bloggers for an election-based project called Citizen Voices. Six people will be selected to blog as “citizen journalists” for KPBS.org from January 2008 through November 2008. Selected applicants will be trained (beginning Nov. 2007) in journalistic ethics to maintain fair and accurate writing.
