My girlfriend and I are relocating to San Diego from Dallas, TX. within the next month or so due to a job transfer. Adriana, my girlfriend, is from SoCal and all of her family still reside in the LA/Palm Springs area. We are sort of familiar with San Diego as far as tourist attractions are concerned, but are not well versed on living in San Diego. We currently live in a high rise loft smack dab in the middle of downtown Dallas. We love the urban life and what it offers. We are in our early 30's and what drew us to the urban life was mainly due to us acquiring two Great Danes who are like our children. We love nightlife, shopping, eating, outdoor rec and, of course, our two Danes. So that's a little bit about us......Here's what we need assistance with: We aren't sure where we want to live in San Diego. We have been researching online for the last month or so, but it hasn't really assisted us in narrowing down our search. We are looking to rent and not purchase, due to relocation purposes and not wanting to have to deal with buying and selling houses at this time. If you could throw any information our way, we we would be appreciative! ~ Greg
Life is good in SD, if you have lots of $MONEY$. Sounds to me like you would enjoy living downtown in the Gaslamp. The rent will not be cheap there and parking will be horrible, especially if you don't have designated parking spaces for each of your cars. I'm assuming that you will need to drive to get to your jobs and transportation here is not really the best.
In the morning traffic is bumper to bumper heading west and north in SD and of course we do have some from the north that would be people living outside of SD driving into SD to work. Jobs here are concentrated around the Mira Mesa area/exit, I've always wondered why and if Qualcomm is the only employer here in SD! yikes...
If you move to the east county (east of the 15 off of the 8 freeway) the rents will be cheaper, it will be SO hot along with zero nightlife. Ditto for anything east of the 15 freeway.
There were many houses built in Bonita, Eastlake that are beautiful, however, not much going out there esp. for nightlife.
If you move to the southbay aka Chula Vista where 85% of the people seem to live (traffic will be your worse nightmare along with nightlife, oh and count your life being at risk in there too passing through National City (aka nasty city).
If you can financially swing living inside the Gaslamp area you will be near the coast and enjoy the nice breezes SD offers. Outlying areas from the Gaslamp itself are NOT recommended, they are extremely poor and unless you want to deal with roaches or your life I would not live around there.
I would have to say along with all of the other people in SD that the Gaslamp is where you want to find a place. The airport is close by and you may hear planes. I would avoid living in Little Italy at all costs unless you are desperate or can't afford to live IN the Gaslamp itself. In Little Italy you will hear trains, planes and automobiles ALL NIGHT and DAY LONG (made this mistake agreeing to stay at a hotel recommendation at 'La Pension' - don't fall for it). There are lot's of older places to live in the Gaslamp some which have been renovated but certainly what you are looking for and if you have strong legs that don't mind walking (unlike most people who live here who fight to get a close parking). Just don't be anywhere near the Amtrak station unless you are deaf.
Mission Valley is not bad (only because of the location being fairly close to downtown) if you can drive every time you want to enjoy the nightlife in downtown. I would think about living there if I could find a house there but I was told they have everything else but not a house. Depending on how much mula$ you can spend and time you're willing to spend to get there would probably be the biggest deciding factor.
Here's a place where you could get some info: http://88202-c.myapartment.com/apartments/California/San-Diego/Avalon-Fashion-Valley/88202/?WT.mc_id=20036
They are right across the Cheesecake Factory (mmmm) and Fashion Valley mall. They say they have "flexible" leases... hmm (prices not cheap).
You may have problems finding rentals that allow for your pets, that's going to be another big concern for you so be prepared.
San Diego is really nice place to live but we get so many "transplants" that bring their bad driving and bad dispositions to our beautiful city. Don't tell others if you come to live here because we are getting way too crowded.
Since you are still young like other young people who come here they move to PB (Pacific Beach). They may have some bars open late at night and major traffic congestion getting into and out of PB but I would not call that quality living. Housing is older and lots of bar room brawls to deal with which may not be what you're looking for but may be a good place to walk dogs near the boardwalk.
Unfortunately, when I asked a realtor for the best location I was told they wouldn't comment. Not because they don't know just because they don't want to put down any area. If you find yourself thinking about Northpark, Normal Heights or anywhere near there you better stay in Dallas. Ask around before committing to a six month+ lease. Might be a good idea if you can find an owner to give you a month rental (if there is such an owner) just so you can see if you like it before being stuck somewhere you don't really want to be living. I rented a hotel room (it was not good) before I found the house and place I wanted to live in which is in Sorrento Valley (absolutely zero nightlife here) but many affluent people living in Pacific Ridge. Some preppies come to Carmel Valley (off of Vista Sorrento Valley Rd) and rent expensive leased gated condo's/townhomes there. They have nice amenities with gym, pool, stadium theater, etc. and even a night once a week to come out and eat for free with your neighbors and friends you want to invite from outside the condo's. I think they allow pets (extra fee) and they have close freeway access.
Only drawback no nightlife close by. Would have to drive downtown for that!
Best of luck!

Hello and congratulations on the choice of location!
San Diego really is a wonderful place to live; the reasons are endless!! There are so many things to consider when moving, and like you said what area to move to in San Diego. I would highly recommend visiting www.alifeinsandiego.com as it breaks down all the communities describing every aspect of them. It will also serve as a resource in living in san diego.
When looking into an area you will need to consider whether it is an area good for families or singles, the crime level and expense. Either way, good luck!
