Chic and gritty at the same time, the Tractor Room is Hillcrest’s neighbor speakeasy; a spot for “honest drinks and meats.”

Its large double doors, combined with a black curtain immediately following your path inside, can be ominous at first. When you finally see the elegant bar, dinner tables, and booths inside, you realize this isn’t your typical eatery.  The refined ruggedness of the establishment mimics old New York speakeasies, and adds a touch of posh, while not sacrificing too much taste. With the lighting dim and romantic, you get the hip, retro feeling without being a hipster, or dressing the part of a 1930s gangster.

The patio has ample room, though crowded and convivial on the weekends it seems.

Last night was Joy Division night with drink specials on all this British and free clove cigarettes. I am ashamed to say I did participate in the smoking, but decided to go a different route when it came to my beverage of choice. Drinks were on the high side. The price of a Guinness on tap was $7.00. I have not had the chance to try any of the staple foods, but the other guests were raving about the scrumptious morsels and tiny frying pans they came in. The popcorn was stale.

On the projector, they played Control, a Joy Division documentary. After watching minutes of this documentary, I finally concluded there was nothing Punk Rock about Joy Division except for the music and the magic of punk rock, and anti-establishment sentiment had disappeared from the meaning as well.

The Tractor Room is a club devoted to the preservation of one of society’s finest forms of socialization, dining. I highly recommend it and I will be back.

Not about the tractor room, but I couldn’t find anything about a place I noticed on my way home from work today. It was called Crescent Heights…has anybody heard of it or tried it out?
