The new fall season means one thing to us true sports fans: football is back. And to us legit locals: San Diego Chargers football is back. Hey, without any real change in weather or atmosphere, football is all we got to remind us of the new season.

Anticipating upcoming Sundays and Mondays full of football, beer, and bar food, I’ve spent the last few weeks reintroducing myself to the top sports bars in San Diego. The season only lasts so long, and I simply don’t have time to waste at unworthy bars. And, if you take my advice, neither do you. From hitting the one year anniversary to one-month-old new, these are the best San Diego sports bars in which to watch 2008 NFL season.

Fleetwood on Sunday, Bare Back on Monday, Redfield’s and Tavern and Bowl every minute in between. If you need me this fall/winter, you know where I’ll be. Go Bolts! Check up on your Chargers stats and game info here.

1. The Fleetwood: Ultimate spot for leather couch lounging with tap beer flowing and multiple plasma TVs covering the walls. This classy restaurant and bar just celebrated its one year anniversary, and will offer $3 mimosas and $5 hand-crafted bloody’s with 10×10-ft. HD quality projector screens. Located downtown in East Village.

2. Redfield’s Lounge and Bistro: This hotel bar at the Manchester Grand Hyatt just got a modern upgrade, with a new atmosphere – reminiscent of an upscale gentleman’s cigar lounge, but only sports-minded gents are allowed in. They don’t have a website, but you can get the info here. Located downtown, by the Convention Center.

3. Bare Back Grill: The new Gaslamp Bare Back Grill is the top sports bar for SoCal sports fans that only stop surfing to catch the latest NFL games. Plus, every Monday, Bare Back hosts an NFL alumni party with ex players and cheerleaders, and a bunch of beer and food specials. Can’t beat it. Located downtown, in the Gaslamp Quarter.

4. East Village Tavern and Bowl: Bowling and football – who knew? The Food Dude makes mean bar eats, and the rowdy sports bar vibe never dies, despite the sleek décor. Located in East Village.

While I would never think to help out non Chargers football fans, here is a pretty blasphemous/funny/helpful guide to the Top Ten Sports Bars for Transplants. In case you’re so new to San Diego you 1. Still root for the Raiders and 2. Don’t know where it’s safe to do so.

Any other Chargers fans out here? Let me know if there are any other cool new sports bars in San Diego I need to fit into my schedule.

As I was thinking we’d have a really good shot ad beating the NE Patriots with Tom Brady out for the season, down goes Shawn Merriman with knee surgery. Oh well, I’ll just keep drinking my ice cold brews and not worry about it.

It’s going to be a great season!!!
