We are traveling to San Diego to celebrate our 29th anniversary…trying to decide where to stay. If choosing between a standard room at The Lodge at Torrey Pines and an oceanview room at the Scripps Inn in La Jolla, does anyone have an opinion which would be better?

I am a native of SoCal, moved to SF a few years ago. I love San Diego, with great weather year round, Balboa Park, and San Diego Zoo (speaking on which, click on my link, pandaslove.com, to see cute panda photos!). But it’s pointless to compare SD with SF, they’re just two different cities with differing strenghs. SF is a world-class city in so many ways. It’s not better than San Diego, just different.

I am an east Bay Area native and moved to SD three years ago to start my college career at State and although SD has beautiful weather, SF wins by far. Most people enjoy SD for its intimacy in being able to know all the hip restaurants or boutique openings and every business opening for that matter, but location and cultural diversity is what makes SF so rich. The location of SF is also a primary benefit, it is surrounded by Berkeley and just a few hours from Napa. With wonderful architecture, lush green parks (Golden Gate park), innovative museums (De Young Museum), and a reputation of being a shopping mecca (Union Square), and the ability to cruise around near Pier 39, SF is incomparable to SD!

I am tired of people making the claim that San Diego is better than SF and , when asked for a jsutification, citing SD’s great weather.
Weather is important. But it doth not a great city make. The simple fact is that SF is a world class city which has made and continues to make authentic cultural contributions… where sacred music concerts are packed, intellectuals feel at home, and incredible diversity.
I am an SD native. I love SD and think it had great potential. However it is marred by complacency in being a cultural backwater, a sadly “red-neck” world view, and lacks many traits of a real world-class city (e.g. meaningful public transit, noteworthy contributions to the arts).
SF is by no means perfect. But it is a treasure trove for any curious tourist. San Diego might be better if you have a family with small children , or something. But if you’re a in your single in your twenties or thirties and looking for an adventure, SF wins hands down
