More Truth, More Details (Part II) Workshop with Judy Reeves

10 am – 1 pm Saturday, December 2
Semi-Permanent Ink Spot, 710 13th St. Studio 210
$30 members/$36 nonmembers

Hosted by San Diego Writers Ink, Pre-Registration Required

One of the ways to move the reader from reading to experiencing your writing is through the effective use of detail. Not enough detail and you’re awash in a sea of generalities; too many and you must slog your way through seaweed to get to shore. But the right details in the right places bring the writing to life and include the reader in the world of the story. This workshop will address the use of specificity in description, character, dialogue and narrative, and focus on how to select and render the telling detail. This is the second part of last summer’s “Truth is in the Details” workshop, and is open to all writers. Participation in the first session is not a prerequisite for this workshop.

and if poetry is more your thing:

The Prose Poem – Investigation & Discovery a Workshop with Roger Aplon

10 am – 4 pm Saturday, December 9
Semi-Permanent Ink Spot, 710 13th St. Studio 210
$60 members/$72 nonmembers

Hosted by San Diego Writers Ink, Pre-Registration Required

The prose poem is the child of associative & colorful prose. A bastard at best. Taking the economy of poetry & marrying it with the random experience of “story.” It can define a momentary, captivating glimpse at some “thing”: a chance encounter, a dream &/or any fragment that allows the reader to impose him or herself in or on that environment.

and the UCSD Extension Winter catalog is out. These Creative Writing classes fill up fast:

From How to Start a Novel with Amy Wallen (who’s book Moonpies and Moviestars will be published in December) to Travel Writing with Jim Benning you can start the New Year off right with a little learnin’!
