The nominees for the San Diego Music Awards were announced yesterday. No surprises in any categories, though if you ask me there are some nominations that are suspect. (Louis XIV? Hasn’t that record been out forever? And weren’t they nominated last year, too? And don’t even get me started on Jason Mraz.) But hey, you can make your voice heard because you can vote here.

And if you want to see one of the bands nominated for Best New Artist, head down to the Casbah on Thursday to check out Grand Ole Party. (Yes, I voted for them though it was a tough choice because UV Tigers were also nominated.)

good to see my fav local act Goodbye Blue Monday on the best alternative list, whatever the heck alternative is. I agree, Grand Ole Party is rad. Between Mraz, Slightly Stoopid, Switchfoot and Louis, I’ll take Louis every year, even if they break up tomorrow.

What nominations in particular look suspect?

i have issues with the artist of the year category. my commentary on the nominees..

As I Lay Dying – I’m okay with this, they really made strides with this album.
Jason Mraz – this album was a commercial failure. maybe because it sucked? nothing had the catchiness of “the remedy”.
Louis XIV – they suck live and their album was supposed to be big but no one ever heard anything but “finding out true love is blind”
Pinback – they didn’t even release an album last year. rob crow spent most of his year working on side projects such as goblin cock and team sleep
Slightly Stoopid – do I even have to go there on this one? overrated band with nothing new to contribute to the scene.
    Switchfoot – see Jason Mraz.

Just my opinions, but you asked.
