Unassigned seating is sort of a differentiator for them. Interesting move:

Southwest to Test Assigned Seating, Southwest Airlines to Test Assigned Seating on About 200 Flights From San Diego - CBS News
Southwest Airlines Co. will test assigning seats to travelers, another indication that the maverick carrier may get in line with other U.S. airlines by junking its first-come, first-served seating system.

Passengers will be assigned seats on about 200 flights from San Diego for several weeks beginning July 10, an airline spokesman said Tuesday.

They claim that the chaotic boarding system is faster… yeah, like when all the A cardholders want to sit in the front of the plane, and the latecomers have to wait for them to put all their crap in the overhead bin before they can board… besides… what if the plane crashes, doesn’t assigned seats make it easier to identify bodies?? (sorry, I’m in a dark place today).

Well then that would me for those who always manage to grab the front seats will then have to endure the fumes in the rear seats for a change.
