Bay Windows – New England’s largest GLBT newspaper | Articles | San Diego Pride NC-17?

On the heels of news reports from last year showing that three volunteers, one staff member and a clown working for San Diego Pride were registered sex offenders, this year’s Pride committee has decided to prohibit all youth 17 and under from attending this year’s Pride festival unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. The festival, which takes place July 29 and 30, is a private ticketed event held in a gated section of Balboa Park, and San Diego Pride’s executive director Ron deHarte has explained the policy in the local press as an effort to protect the safety of LGBT youth. Yet the policy has drawn harsh criticism both from community activists and local and national LGBT media, including the Gay and Lesbian Times, one of the sponsors of the event.

Check this: The Pride Fight:  “The blog has been created to document our fight against San Diego Pride’s discriminatory policy regarding Youth access to the Pride Festival.”

Here’s the official San Diego Pride website. Not much in terms of the controversy.

San Diego’s Gay and Lesbian Times has a very well balanced editorial on the topic.

There’s also a Petition, currently with 399 signatures.
