There are just two left, and one of them is right here in San Diego County: here’s a nice review from last year of the one in San Diego, and the official site of the Santa Clarita one is at The mmm-yoso site also has a link to this history of Farrell’s.

Anyone else remember Farrell’s? I loved the place as a kid, the way it disappeared is a classic example of killing the goose that laid the golden egg. I bet it’s one of the earliest examples of an “experience” type restaurant (e.g: Islands, Buca di Beppo — anything where you’re immersed in the brand of the restaurant). It’s hard to believe they thought they’d be more successful by de-differentiating the place.

I’m pretty young but I still remember early birthdays and such at Farrell’s. It rocks!

Thanks for posting this article Joe. I was a proud Farrell’s employee around the late 70′s back in South Bend, IN. It truly was a memorable experience. (I really don’t like singing the Birthday Song anymore, though.)

Hah! Cool Paul, very glad you enjoyed it.

Do you get flashbacks from old-timey sirens?

We used to always go to Farrell’s after dance recitals. My fave was the Tin Roof… or the Hot Fudge Nutty Nutty . yummmmm

Growing up, we had Farrells in central Ohio as well. Good times!

Didn’t they have those player pianos that played on their own with the rolled sheet music? And, I remember the one in Fashion Valley had a cool little candy shop in the front of the restaurant.

VoiceSD, that’s the one, player pianos and giant ice cream sevings. And yes, candy too. Check the Farrell’s Tidbits page to go down memory lane. :-)

No doubt about it that it is a great place to visit especially as a kid.

Does anyone have recollections of a Farrells (spelling?) on College Avenue in Fort Collins, CO? Late ’70′s, early ’80′s? Across from the old Woolworths, or maybe a block or two south of there? Red and white striped awning, or maybe it was the paint on the store front.
