I know, it’s now called the San Diego County Fair, but as a long time resident with memories of trudging all the way up to Del Mar from Clairemont when I was 7 to perform at the Fair with Miss Vernetta’s Dance Studio, I will always call it the Del Mar Fair.
They have a pretty impressive lineup of concerts this year if you’re an American Idol fan (Bo Bice, Carrie Underwood), or if you’re a country/western fan (BlackHawk, Little Texas, Restless Heart and Tracy Lawrence) or if you’re old (Heart, Rick Springfield, Styx, Kenny Loggins) but seriously it seems like there’s a little something for everyone, from reggae to mariachi, Ozomatli to Melissa Etheridge….
Anyone gone yet this year? Tried the infamous fried twinkies on a stick? Personally, I prefer with the basics either the Island Teriyaki Chicken sandwich or roasted corn (I swear I can smell it from my place here in Solana Beach!)

I am deeply dismayed that the mexican flag is being displayed at the fairgrounds. This is nothing but disrespect for the millions of citizens who entered our Country legally. San Diego is so over-run with ILLEGALS that have reduced the quality of life for the middle class AMERICANS and you encourage more mexicans by flying that flag of theirs. I won’t be attending this year!
Lee, it seems to me that it would be rude to not fly the flag. We’re living in what used to be “Alta California” after all. The historical ties, and heck, just good manners indicates we oughta include our southern neighbor’s flag at the Fair.
How is your quality of life reduced exactly, really, Lee?
Who is the GOD DAMMED idiot who authorized the flying of a Mexican flag at the fair? I want to know so that we can work on getting that buffoon fired.
Gee John I would rather see the Mexican Flag flown than to have someone use the name of my God in vain. I think the person who authorized the flying of the Mexican Flag is a progressive thinker and understands diversity, and he is able to embrace, and respect the community as a whole.. Why does this issue cause such anger? What is really the problem?
As long as the stars and stripes are higher on the poles (as per the rules), then what is the big deal about flying other flags at an entertainment event?
I’m at a loss for what the big deal is too. Do we hate Mexico now? Here are the rules for the display of the flag.
Tim Fennell, Del Mar Fairgrounds chief executive officer and general manager quoted in a NC Times article June 30 said: “… [Flying the Mexican flag] … is simply a welcoming of our friends and neighbors….”
Do we now not like tourists from Mexico?
I’m trying to get in touch with a man named Phillip Ash. I understand he’s an expert on roses and has some association with the Del Mar Fair. If anyone has any knowledge of how I can reach him, please let me know.
