brianstorms weblog: San Diego New Tech Meetup . . . Not

After two months of trying to get speakers for the San Diego New Tech Meetup, and not getting any commitments from anyone to speak, I’ve shut down the group and have no intentions of starting it up again. It turned out to be a big waste of time.

Previously on brianstorms.
I had a lot of experience putting together events for websandiego, but it’s hard darn work wrangling cats to get together and talk geek. If I were still in San Diego I’d have been all over that. I’m now in Simi Valley (though I still carpetbag to keep up this site!) and am looking for similar geek things up here, though I think I need to go into L.A. for that sort of thing. BarCamp seems to be promising along those lines. I sympathize with Brian Dear’s efforts in that area.

Why is so much work to get nerds together to chat and network without it being more about marketing than technology?

Most geeks have social issues. Not conducive to getting people to speak or excited about meeting up :P . That said, I thought our last blogging event was really successful!

Hi – we’re seeking a venue for BarCampSanDiego:

We thought we had something lined up on the UCSD campus, but it’s not condusive to people hanging out all night.

The San Diego Blog Thing 2006 was fun.

Ditto on the blog thing…. it was pretty low key and casual from an attendee point of view, but I’m sure a lot of effort went into making that happen considering we had some food and some prizes.

I feel the pain of Brian Dear. Why’s it gotta be so hard, yo? Getting together and getting our geek on should be easier but it’s kind of like pulling teeth.

    Another thought…

I wouldn’t want to be responsible for finding a bunch of speakers either. This is the cool aspect of barcamps. If only a small number of people show up, it can be a success. Everyone’s a potential speaker.

No need to worry about scheduling. Just get a location, a network, some wireless routers and lots of tape and paper and you’re good to go.

    BarCampSanFrancisco was a blast.
