KPBS’s nightly news and public affairs TV show Full Focus has launched a new segment called Public Square - a place for San Diegans to deliver commentaries or essays on issues and idea that you are passionate about.  I invite you and your colleagues to consider delivering a commentary or essay on Full Focus.  You will find our criteria for submitting a commentary below.

I look forward to hearing from you!

FULL FOCUS COMMENTARY CRITERIA

KPBS will accept commentaries from members of the public on a wide variety of issues, including politics, education, the arts, science, technology, law enforcement, health, business, social issues and development and land usage, among others.  Below are the criteria for an acceptable commentary:

  1. Commentaries must be no more than 225 words.
  2. Commentaries may be accepted on local, regional, national, or international issues, provided they are relevant to the interests of the San Diego public television audience in the judgment of Full Focus producers.
  3. Full Focus reserves the right to approve commentary topics and language. KPBS is looking for commentaries on a wide range of subjects so acceptance may depend on achieving variety as much as on quality writing and story telling.
  4. KPBS will edit commentaries for grammatical errors, and will suggest language for clarity, though we will respect the writer’s intention.  All edits will be reviewed by the commentator for final approval.
  5. Commentaries may not include defamatory, malicious or slanderous language, or substantial excerpts from others’ work.
  6. Commentators must be able to document facts asserted in commentaries at the request of Full Focus producers.
  7. KPBS does NOT pay for commentaries.
  8. KPBS retains copyright privileges.

Commentators must provide:

  1. E-mailed or faxed copy of commentary for review to KPBS.
  2. Upon request, provide proof of name and residence and, if relevant to the topic, of employment.  For instance, if you represent yourself as a parent of a school-age child or a retired teacher and you send in a commentary on the actions of a school board, please include a photocopy of your driver’s license, your telephone number and, when relevant, documentation of current or former employment.

KPBS will:

  1. Arrange with commentator a date and time to tape the commentary in the KPBS studio.
  2. Provide the introduction to the commentary and the screen identification of the commentator and his/her city or area of residence.
