Coffee drinkers, such as Michael Allen Smith, a software engineer in San Diego who runs the Web site www.ineedcoffee.com., said he’d be interested in knowing whether he has the caffeine gene. Still, it probably wouldn’t lower his caffeine consumption.

“My perfect level of coffee is around four units — either a double espresso or a mug of coffee,” he said in a telephone interview. “If I drink more, I’m tired. If I drink less, I’m tired.”
