Kirk House sent us: Reasons Unbeknownst: Big Wednesday

I drove around PB and La Jolla with my new digital camera and got some photos of the big waves. There is a link is to a Flickr Photoset as well as a short video of the big surf.

Love the blog by the way.

Surfrider Foundation has this Surf Report (From near the Orange and San Diego County line):

Happy Winter Solstice! The BIG surf is here as the best set waves are a solid double-overhead plus at those spots that pick up well a West swell. Lots of water moving. DON’T GET NEAR THE WATER UNLESS YOU ARE A STRONG AND EXPERIENCED SWIMMER/SURFER. Every 10 minutes or so a clean-up, monster set rolls in. From shore, the waves may not seem as big as powerful as they are since the waves are breaking much farther out than usual and the distance makes them seem like they’re in slow motion. The wave shape isn’t ideal, though, and many spots are completely closed out. Some of the usual big wave spots are holding the size, however. Tough to paddle into, then steep, fast drops and sometimes very long rides with room for maneuvers. It’s all about being in the right place at the right time. The paddle out can be tough and it’s really not recommended that you loiter inside. The tides are moderate today and almost irrelevant given how far outside the waves are breaking. We could get some light to moderate onshore winds out of the South in the afternoon which could hurt the wave shape.
