Interesting San Diego tidbit on Poynter.org: Giving Classifieds Away Free
The San Diego Union-Tribune is reporting that its free-classifieds program, in place since late August, is a “success.” It allows private parties to place up to 12 free ads per year which go in the print edition and on the website. Free ads are permitted in the categories of merchandise, automotive, boats, jobs wanted, found pets, and found items; goods for sale cannot be valued at more than $5,000.
What you get for free is a three-line text ad running for seven days; if you want more text or a longer run, you’ll pay an extra fee. There are plenty of ways the newspaper can get your money: upcharges for photos, attention getters, etc.

While the UT gives people this “free service,” they are also increasing their subscription rates… probably to help cover this cost, as well as all of the advertising they are purchasing to “sell” their newspapers.

With limitations of how many lines of text and value of the item, the UT really can’t compete with megasite like Craigslist or even local Fox6 Classifieds (http://sandiego.fox6.com), which is completely free, doesn’t have any limits, and you can include photos and for a very small fee get have the ad printed in the SDReader or featured on the site.

If I may take this opportunity to do a shameless plug…some time ago I launched my own website. It’s called The Mega Board and if you come visit, you can post/view ads for free across a range of categories (except jobs, because as we all know, Monster.com is the best jobs board ever). Some of you may say, “Sam, this new site of yours is nothing but a Craigslist rip-off.” Well my friends, the Beatles started off imitating the great artists of their time and then evolved into something entirely unique and wonderful. Only time will tell if TheMegaBoard.com is more like Ringo than John, but I intend to create something I can call my own. Please visit if you get a chance.
