Hey there San Diego Bloggers!

Certain San Diegans have been tugging on my coat about a blog meet event == it’s way too late to hope for something this month. But how do folks feel about doing it in January? We were thinking of doing it on January 16th. Evening, someplace we can talk and chat and complain about comment spam and wax philosophical about blogging, personal journaling, how to make more money with AdSense, what happens when your mom/dad/kids/co-workers and other related topics. There may be caffeine and or alcohol, too. Suggestions for venue welcome here!

Who’s interested? I have contact information for many of the folks on San Diego Bloggers, but I LITERALLY have never done a mass email to those folks, but I intend to next.

Who’s interested? Comment here and point other bloggers to this post for more info. I intend the hype the heck out of this deal, so expect to get sick of hearing about it real soon now.

Ahem. Hollaback, girl.

Rock Bottom in UTC has lots of room, good ale and it centrally located. Since some people won’t get that Monday off, how about 5-6PM?

  2. Joe Crawford said on Thursday, December 8, 2005, 15:44

Rock Bottom is a pretty great venue (it’s where I met my wife, actually) – I’m not opposed to that date, as for time, that sounds good to me too.

Also, remember you can trackback to this post http://sandiegoblog.com/archives/2005/12/08/san-diego-blogger-party/trackback/

    Sounds good.
Nothing more to add. Just tryin to get this snowball rolling.

  4. Carl Starrett said on Thursday, December 8, 2005, 15:50

Mission Valley is more centrally located, so maybe some place like Seau’s might do the trick.

  5. Eric Williamson said on Thursday, December 8, 2005, 15:51

Sounds good. Would be great to meet other San Diego bloggers, especially those of shared interests. Cheers! -Eric

I would LOVE to participate in a blog meet. Unfortunately, I’ll be out of town for business the week of the 16th. drat.

  8. route66 said on Thursday, December 8, 2005, 16:06

MLK day is OK. Time and place TBD. Suggest setting up a poll with choices. Avoiding rush hour is a primary concern, although holiday traffic may be light.

  9. Joe Crawford said on Thursday, December 8, 2005, 16:11

Consider this post a poll, folks. Chime in with suggestions sil vous please!

  10. Matthew said on Thursday, December 8, 2005, 16:12

I’d be interested. Mission Valley does seem logical. Seaus or Rock Bottom probably wouldn’t be too busy on a Sunday night – especially if NFL playoff games are done by then.

  11. lyn said on Thursday, December 8, 2005, 16:24

the valley is logical, though i am more into dave and busters – they have a great happy hour.

  12. Jenn said on Thursday, December 8, 2005, 16:31

UTC area works better for me since I work in Carlsbad.

  13. Joel Price said on Thursday, December 8, 2005, 16:32

I like the idea. Personally I would like to have a few speakers talk about blogging software, what works what doesn’t.

  14. Scoobie Davis said on Thursday, December 8, 2005, 16:40

I’m kind of spoiled in that I just moved to SD from LA and I was a master Hollywood party crasher so I have high standards for parties.

  15. Bonnie said on Thursday, December 8, 2005, 16:42

How interesting! Have you all done a blog meet event before?

The UTC area also works better for me.

  16. Joelle said on Thursday, December 8, 2005, 16:51

Ok, so… I’d LOVE to go and I think it sounds fun. But are people going to actually be there this time? ;)

  17. Kathy said on Thursday, December 8, 2005, 16:53

I’d vote for the UTC area.

Rock Bottom has an awesome upstairs room for private parties, big screen TV, fireplace, balcony, pool tables.

  18. Declan said on Thursday, December 8, 2005, 16:56

    I’m in!

Rock Bottom gets pretty full, unless we can get the upstairs.

  19. Anita Cohen-Williams said on Thursday, December 8, 2005, 17:13

Both Dave & Busters and Seau’s are way too loud. Rock Bottom can also get noisy, and we would have to pay to get the room upstairs.

On the other hand, I have a fine, free venue at La Pinata on the edge of Old Town. Great bar, large private room (seats 48), and wonderful Mexican food.

  20. Alejandro said on Thursday, December 8, 2005, 17:17

I’d be more interested in the Old Town suggestion or a downtown spot. But where-ever, sounds like a fun idea.

  21. Christine said on Thursday, December 8, 2005, 17:23

Count me in. I prefer the UTC area.

  22. MAS said on Thursday, December 8, 2005, 17:35

Rock Bottom UTC won’t be too busy on Monday MLK Day. Traffic should be light as well. They have awesome appetizers as well. Wired-Dude are you in?

  23. Don Bosch (evaneco.com) said on Thursday, December 8, 2005, 17:46

Just piling on – count me in. No preference for a location (unless you all want to drive all the way out to Viejas).

  24. Ray said on Thursday, December 8, 2005, 17:59

I’d be interested, but I’d prefer a coffeehouse or someplace other than a bar. Someplace where you can actually hear other people talk I live in South Park, so Rebecca’s or any of the coffee shops in North Park would work for me.

Monday’s are usually bad days for me, but I don’t have to travel to L.A. on MLK day, so 1/16 is fine. Otherwise, most any other night of the week is better or even a weekend afternoon.

  25. Alan Kellogg said on Thursday, December 8, 2005, 18:19

I have a soft spot for bloggers who can’t organize their thoughts (got the email), so I’ll be there. :)

  26. Ted said on Thursday, December 8, 2005, 18:55

Hi! Of course, I prefer UTC because, well, I live on Regents and La Jolla Village Drive. But anywhere that’s not too crowded and festive is fine. I always feel that cafes are awk for large meet-and-greets. It’s great idea, though. I just moved from NYC, so I miss a blog community!

  27. Geoff Young said on Thursday, December 8, 2005, 19:04

I’m interested. Wherever is fine with me.

  28. MyStars said on Thursday, December 8, 2005, 19:23

As an Astrologer I can tell you that the date you’ve chosen is perfect for a party! I’ll be there!

  29. christine said on Thursday, December 8, 2005, 19:53

I’d be interested; I prefer UTC because I am WAAAAY North County. Do we just keep checking back for final details?

  30. DrWeb said on Thursday, December 8, 2005, 20:01

We’re game! Go for it, and e-mail us about the meetup.. sounds like fun!!
    Bloggingly yours,

  31. Wired Dude said on Thursday, December 8, 2005, 20:26

Rock Bottom is a great choice, it’s where we had the last one!

  32. Brian Carter said on Thursday, December 8, 2005, 21:01

I second the Old Town or Coffee shop- I don’t drink and don’t want to meet people I’ve never met who are drunk- drinking, no problem, but drunk? Forget it.

If you want to meet in a quieter place and have a real conversation, however… let me know.

    B

  33. Jason said on Thursday, December 8, 2005, 21:23

I vote for Seau’s or the Old Town venue. If pressed, I could also do Rock Bottom – but that freeway exit is crazy at rush hour – MLK or no.

  34. missewon said on Friday, December 9, 2005, 0:52

  39. Jenn said on Friday, December 9, 2005, 10:39

You won’t be the only girl there! I may even bring my roommate and my sister just to be sure! :-)

  40. ken grandlund said on Friday, December 9, 2005, 11:05

I’d love to attend. Just a when and a where is all I need.

  41. evvy said on Friday, December 9, 2005, 12:06

    I would love a ‘meet’! Think it’s a great idea…

I ditto a coffeehouse setting rather than a bar.
And old town is much more convienient for me (in a wheelchair, use public transit).

Perhaps 2 ‘meets’ each year-to cover everyones schedule??? One on an evening in a bar, and one an afternoon in a coffeehouse??? One in winter, one in summer?

Would be great if this became an annual event!

  42. Michael Allen Smith said on Friday, December 9, 2005, 12:22

I don’t think it’s possible to please everyone. So maybe we need 2 shifts for this meetup?

Part 1- Meetup earlier in a quiet coffee house w/ wi-fi. Have any speakers present here.
Part 2- Meetup after Part 1 at Rock Bottom for the party portion.

Then the blogger could choose which part they wish to attend … or they could attend both. You’ll see me at Part 2, I’ll be the one drinking the oatmeal stout. :)

  43. Jed said on Friday, December 9, 2005, 12:42

I will be wherever everyone decides on January 16th.

  44. Brian Carter said on Friday, December 9, 2005, 13:48

Actually, Michael, I think your suggestion just might please everyone.

I’d be happy to talk about adwords/froogle/amazon in the first portion if there’s any interest in internet marketing.

  45. daniel said on Friday, December 9, 2005, 19:50

I’d go to ‘part 2′ as well!

    :)

  46. Georganna Hancock said on Saturday, December 10, 2005, 11:50

The date is fine with me, although I can’t drive far, especially in the dark, or drunk. Or both. I’d appreciate a venue in which we can hear each other, otherwise what’s the point of a R.W. meeting? Of course, we could play something like Speed Dating and switch off for in pairs for a few minutes each in hopes of hearing and being heard. Or … how about meeting at the Mission Valley Library (if we can get a room) and then those who need to drink can stagger over to a nearby bar?

  47. route66 said on Saturday, December 10, 2005, 15:52

Libraries will be closed that day. I know that the socal freenet group likes to meet at the Influx Cafe downtown.

  48. Beckie said on Sunday, December 11, 2005, 9:04

Dave and Buster’s isn’t THAT loud, plus if you have a large party you can get a room I think. In the restaurant part it’s not loud and they have plenty of seats for big groups.

  49. voicesd said on Sunday, December 11, 2005, 9:05

Old Town would be great. Free parking and public transit. And, did I see that someone would donate the room?

  50. oso said on Sunday, December 11, 2005, 12:57

I’ll be there. Wherever there is.

  51. oso said on Sunday, December 11, 2005, 13:00

When the place is decided on and an official post is made, someone should make a badge that we can put on our blogs.

  52. Sean said on Monday, December 12, 2005, 9:41

Doh! I’ll be in Thailand on vacation, sigh!

  53. lex said on Monday, December 12, 2005, 12:02

I like Mike’s idea of a two-phased moveable feast. I’d probably show up at phase 2 rather than phase 1. If I found it easy to simply talk to strangers, then I probably wouldn’t blog ;-)

UTC is optimal for me in North County, but could do Old Town nearly as easily. For whatever reason, I find Mission Valley to be a sore trial from the perspective of navigation and traffic flow.

  54. Wired Dude said on Thursday, December 15, 2005, 12:57

I’ll try to be at both. I suggest Urban Grind in Hillcrest for Part 1, and Rock Bottom for Phase 2, but I’m cool with whatever venues, places are chosen. Hoping to meet up with some folks at Rock Bottom on 1/16/06 though!

    I’m in!

I just came back from PubCon a few weeks ago, http://www.PubCon.com and had the amazing experience of hanging out with 2000 other webmasters. After a while it feels like you are the only one in the world who keeps track of Page Rank, is trying to avoid duplicate content, and checking Google to see how you rank for different terms!

Then all of a sudden you realize there are a bunch of other dorks who spend as much time at 2:00 a.m. on their computers as you do.

Sign me up, and count me in. I will even go one better than that. Tell me what I can do to make it a successful event for everyone, and I will see what I can do!
