The BBC, in selected online news items, is currently publishing moderated readers’ comments. In this article about the appointment of Paul Wolfowitz to head the World Bank, San Diegan Bruce Macdonald chimes in:

The architect of our Iraq debacle as head of the World Bank - instead of being consigned to the dust heap of failed American policy??? Outrageous, dangerous, and against the world tide of progress for humanity. I am ashamed and chagrined. Europe, flip the deck - challenge this appointment, don’t accept it. Flex your muscles and reject this nomination.

Wouldn’t it be nice if the online arm of the Union-Tribune, SignOnSanDiego.com also published readers comments in line with each article rather than on a separate, difficult to find page?

I’d love a feature like that on sosd.com, definitely. It would need to be moderated like the BBC’s is. That way, we can see comments like San Diegan Peter’s on Tony Blair’s leadership during the Iraq War:

On some level you have to respect Blair. All along he has continued to stand by his beliefs regarding British involvement in Iraq. Even with popular opinion against him, he continues to do what he knows is right for the war against terror. By now, most politicians in his position would just do what his constituency wanted in order to get re-elected. He is putting his job on the line for a cause he believes in.
