This week Google announced maps.google.com, which lets you navigate by dragging your mouse. It will also place pins in the map when you enter driving directions or search inside that location (example: try searching on Starbucks for zip code 92101).

Amazon’s A9 Yellow Pages also has something with potential: Block View maps. This feature lets you virtually walk along street level of the address you enter. According to this article on Geek.com, San Diego isn’t one of the first 10 cities to get this feature. However, I was able to find that part of F Street in Gaslamp was mapped.

    More about Google Maps:

By now, many of you will have gone and tried out the new Google Maps application. By and large, you have to admit that it’s pretty damned slick for a DHTML web application — even my wife was impressed, and that’s not easy with geek toys. So, in the spirit of Google Suggest and GMail, I’ve decided to have a quick peek under the hood to figure out what makes it tick.

    Will Google never cease improving?

When I took it for a spin last week I was able to find some storefronts on University in Hillcrest. I think I was searching for coffee and/or cafe in 92101 and got to them that way.

Nice irony, I know MAS is a big coffeehound.

    Great post MAS!
