Normal Heights InstallWhile I keep failing on my promise to put together a San Diego Wi-Fi directory, the volunteers at Socal Free Net have been hard at work to offer free wireless in and around San Diego.

Their latest success story - Normal Heights:

On Sunday, January 30th, SoCalFreeNet.org volunteers Matt, Drew, Serin and Lee met at the residence of SoCalFreeNet.org member Steve in Normal Heights to deploy the newest SoCalFreeNet node! Thanks to the great preparation work by Steve, the install was a slam dunk.

Hello: When I discovered the Normal Heights node about 6 months ago, it worked beautifully. But now, it’s impossible to get connected. It seems to be getting from bad to worse. About week ago, it was only early in the morning that I could get connected. Now, it’s never. This morning, I walked to Bancroft St. with my laptop, and I got connected to Netgear instantly with a very strong signal. Therefore, I think there is nothing wrong with my computer. I live only a couple of houses down from the Node–I can see the antenna from my backyard. Thanks, Hiroshi

Until yesterday, the Wi-Fi worked beautifully. I really appreciated it. Now, however, my AirPort icon has a very weak signal, and everything goes very, very slowly, much more slowly than my dial-up connection. If I select ’socalfreenet.org’, I get ‘error joining the AirPort Network’ message. Thanks for listening to me.
