The SoCalFreeNet mailing list just announced an important volunteer opportunity to expand internet access where it is most needed. This is a great opportunity to share your tech knowledge and computer experience to help close the digital divide in San Diego.

SoCalFreeNet has recently been featured in two articles about how free wireless networks can help create a sense of community and grassroots participation.

Calling all volunteers for another exciting Wi-Fi deployment!

Background:
The El Toyon Rec Center is a community center operated by the Parks & Rec department of National City. It is a very low income community, with an overwhelming need for a computer lab and wireless access. The center sponsors after school programs, such as sports, games and arts & crafts for 60-80 children every week day. A generous local resident has stepped forward to pay for the monthly ISP fees (Thanks Wayne!) and also provide on-site technical support if future needs arise.

Address:
2005 E. 4th Street National City

Initial Observations:
SoCalFreeNet.org members toured the facilities today– the location is
ideal for wireless access– on a high point, surrounded by parks and
residential areas. Roof access is a little bit tricky- no flat areas-
it’s all shingle at a mild angle. Thankfully, the roof is not tall– all
single story. A series of rooms (kind of like a large U-Shape) comprise
the center. Most rooms are in poor condition, in need of painting and
roof repair. A large table has been set aside in the ceramics room for
about 10 PCs.

The Plan:
This project has 2 distinct projects: A. Set up a computer lab. B. Set up a wireless node on the rooftop.

How you can Help:
We are dividing this project into the following tasks… if you would like
to volunteer your time for this project, please send an e-mail to
volunteersocalfreenet.org and indicate your area of interest
.

1. Set up PCs (general Windows/Networking experience a plus)
2. Creating several segments of custom length Cat5 cables (cable making experience a plus)
3. Install Antenna Mast on Shingled roof (mast installation experience a plus)
4. Install grounding rod and running cat5 cable from DSL to rooftop.
5. Training and Education (helping Rec Center staff with basic technology questions on install day).

The DSL line was ordered today and we expect to organize an install day as soon as the gear is ready and the bandwidth is available.

Thanks again!
