Today’s Local Nuisance

On 11/09/04, Oso posted Taking Aim at the North County Times. In it he mentions that soon North County residents will start receiving free newspapers. Since that time many communities in Carlsbad, Oceanside, San Marcos, Vista and Escondido have been flooded with thousands of unwanted newspapers. Getting the paper to STOP coming is not as easy as you would think.

I live in an Escondido community near the Wild Animal Park. Since Today’s Local News started showing up on our driveways, many of our residents have called to have the paper stop coming. For over a month now, all of our calls have been ignored. Every morning another newspaper is thrown on our driveway. Some of us have called several times. Having thousands of unwanted newspapers blowing around an area that was evacuated during the San Diego fires isn’t a wise idea.

Last week I learned from a source inside the company that they outsource the newspaper delivery to two companies. One of the companies responds to stop delivering requests, the other doesn’t. Supposedly by next year everything will be resolved. Needless to say the numerous calls from angry North County residents isn’t helping their image. Recently TLN had to employ checkers to go around and pick up newspapers from homes since they can’t control one of their delivery vendors.

If you live in North County and would like to stop receiving this litter every morning call 866-737-7525. If that number fails, the delivery supervisor can be reached at 877-707-4224.

Here’s an interesting article:

With a staff of 38 people, the new paper operates independently of the Union-Tribune as a wholly owned subsidiary, even outsourcing the printing. Hastings would not comment on how much money The Copley Press put behind the publication or how long it will continue to do so.

What Hasting did say however, was that it was a way for the company to grow its circulation.
