Last week Petty Officer 3rd Class Pablo Paredes refused to board his ship in San Diego en route to Iraq. As the Union-Tribune explained:
For nearly two hours, the weapons-control technician sat on his ship’s pier at the 32nd Street Naval Station. He talked with media and waited to be arrested, but the arrest didn’t happen.
Paredes’ decision has created plenty of opinion and discussion. San Diego Blogger Indepundit wrote a critical open letter to Paredes which Paredes then responds to.
The San Diego Union-Tribune first reports on Paredes’ decision. Then, an editorial criticizes that decision which generates many letters to the editor.
Jim Carter of the San Diego Military Counseling Project interviewed Paredes which was then rebroadcast on Democracy Now!. Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! also spoke with Paredes.
Locally based RadioActiveRadio.org (which has a new blog) interviewed Pablo Paredes on December 10th. He was also interviewed on NPR’s All Things Considered.
Lastly, the mailing list of the San Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice has been keeping up to date on Paredes’ fate.
