wikipediaToday’s Union-Tribune has an interesting article about the San Diego origins of the surprising hit resource of the internet - Wikipedia:

Back at the end of the Internet’s wacky-idea era, entrepreneur Jimmy Wales and academician Larry Sanger were trying to create a free, online encyclopedia called Nupedia.

Over dinner in Pacific Beach in early January 2001, Sanger came up with a doozy: Why not let the teeming masses write and edit their own encyclopedia?

Usually when I have dinner in Pacific Beach the only thought that comes to me is ‘where should we grab a beer.’ Sanger and Wales were obviously a bit more innovative.

I know that Joe has contributed to Wikipedia. Have any other San Diego readers and/or bloggers?

I’ve also contributed. But I’m not going to say to which articles for fear of defacement and vandalism. (Hehe.)

Great site (I love it!), but caveat lector (as the article mentions). If I were doing a research article, I would use it as a starting-off point, but the nature of completely-public wikis will always make it a lesser form of pedia or peer-reviewed authoritative source.
