Scrojo's Frank Black posterYou’ve probably seen his artwork - especially if you frequent the Belly Up in Solana Beach. His name is Scrojo - and he’s been designing concert posters for about two decades now. I found his website at Scrojo.com and saw some great stuff reminiscent of Kozik’s work. There’s posters for Stephen Malkmus, Elliott Smith, Bob Mould, Kinky and other acts that have graced the stage at one time or another. There are definitely a couple of posters on my wishlist there. Went looking for a PJ Harvey, but nothing yet…

Also found a link to a short interview with him at SignOnSanDiego as well as some more samples here.
It turns out the also designed the logo for the local music TV show “Fox Rox.”

I’ve always wondered who did Belly Up’s posters. Good work - I think I might buy a couple from shows I’ve seen there. $25 a print seems reasonable.

I’m a professional illustrator/designer myself, not too far up the road from you guys in Ell Ay, and I’ve loved Scrojo’s work for some time now. Scroungy sensibilities, subtle but diabolical sense of humor, great sense of design, line, and color– and he knows the tradition, from the great 60s psych poster artists like Wes Wilson and Bonnie McLean and the crazy car mag artists, to more modern guys like Coop and the lounge thing. And he’s always right on with the feel of the act. Happy to see the tradition live on!
