Cool! The San Diego Public Library is rolling out lots of new wireless. I had an email exchange with a friend about it and she directed me to the very helpful Margaret Kazmer of the SDPL, and she says this:

A list of SDPL libraries with wireless is listed on our web pages at http://www.sandiego.gov/public-library/searching-the-net/wirelessaccess.shtml#locations.

Only nine are listed. I believe that more than half of the branch libs now have wireless installed. However, our Tech Support team is moving very rapidly and I expect that the system will be complete by the mid September.

We were waiting to update our web pages until we have the system completed. Otherwise, updates to the pages will have to be made every day or so. When all branches have wireless capabilities we will be issuing a press release.

It’s really awesome that more libraries have free wireless. This is a great shot in the arm for wireless in San Diego. Also worth a look for local wireless news are San Diego Wireless Users Group and airshare.org.

We’ve made some other mentions of wireless in San Diego on San Diego Blog — search for “wireless” at right to see some other mentions.

Chula Vista Public Library’s Civic Center Branch is also providing wireless beginning Friday Aug. 20. They’re also going with a new, bookstore-ish type marketplace with popular (not just new) book displays, and even providing food & beverage vending machines. Food in the library - what a concept! It’s a national trend, but CV’s the first in the county to try it.

The Chula Vista website has announcement about the changes at the Chula Vista Public Library Civic Center library. When it rolls out we’ll try and spotlight it here on the blog.
