Andrew Phelps writes about the recent LA/San Diego rivalry in baseball:
It was like a miniature World Series — the league’s two best teams fought like crazy for victory, complete with memorable mishaps, intense rivalries, and bizarre twists.
Ducksnorts: Geoff’s Baseball Weblog has lots more Pads coverage. San Diego Blog is sorely lacking in the sportsblogging world. Ducksnorts also has lots more tasty sports/Padres links.

Go to a Chargers game with the Raiders or the Green Bay Packers and the Charger fans are outnumbered. Go to a Padres game with the Dodgers and you will be surrounded by Dodger fans. San Diego has always been a town where many people are originally from somewhere else and their team loyalties derive from where they came from. It’s a bandwagon town where a lot of fans get on only when the homeboys are winning. Thus, the current lack of San Diego sportsblogs.
That guy’s dumb
Rapier-like wit.
This is a side-comment on local fan attendance.
My personal theory on why local sportsfan game attendance appears to be lower than other cities is that we’re spoiled.
Not the only reason, but I think San Diego’s weather and activity diversity are factors.
With the nice weather (as compared to winters in Green Bay),
there’s a lot of outdoor activities choices to pick from (in addition to attending a sporting event ;-).
FWIW, I’ve been a Charger season ticket holder since ‘94
Ken W,
Are you kidding me? Attendance has been incredibly high at PETCO Park for the popular Padres. It hit its highest ever number at the Dodgers game the other night and more than 2 million this season. At tonight’s game (a Wednesday game versus an average team), more than 43,600 people packed the park.
The true test of fan loyality can only be measured when they stop winning.
Andrew’s comment got me curious about the Padres attendance.
I think this being the first year of the new ballpark contributed to the bump in attendance. Hopefully, it will continue in the years to come.
I’m not a baseball fan. It’s been a few years since I’ve attended a game.
Unlike a Charger’s home game, is it pretty obvious that Padres fans outnumber the visiting team’s fans?
Anyways, I did a quick search and found a couple of interesting pages:
Side Note: I’ll be going to a Padres game this Sunday. My wife’s 10-year old nephew is having his birthday/tailgate party there. It’ll be fun to see the new ballpark.
Live in the south bay, lots of Raider stickers on cars and flags in peoples garges. Broncos fans are a common site also many stickers and license frames. The military has an influence on number of attendance of people supporting teams from cities
they are originally from.
