Nobelist, colleagues cracked DNA code

Francis Crick, who was 88, died last night at Thornton Hospital in San Diego after a long battle with colon cancer. Along with James Watson, Crick was best known for discovering the structure of DNA – the mysterious molecule that defines and determines every form of life.

“History will judge him certainly as one of the influential biologists of the 20th century, if not the most influential,” said Richard Murphy, president of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, which Crick joined in 1976.

San Diego is a biotech hub. Here;s the The Salk Institute for Biological Studies website. Here’s a story about the funding for the Crick-Jacobs Center for Computational and Theoretical Biology. Jacobs is a wireless tech guy and a big philanthropist. Here’s the biography for Francis Crick on Wikipedia.org
