SDRadio.net today reports that Air America Radio is coming to San Diego:
Air America Radio ready for America’s Finest City.
Coming soon to 1360 AM, Air America Radio programming. The new national-talk show network has started on its biggest move as Clear Channel Communications is bringing more of its smaller stations on line with AAR programming. First tried in the Pacific Northwest, Portland’s numbers for AAR went beyond expectation of Clear Channel. A couple of weeks ago, the experiment went to Florida — and again, the audience was listening to a new voice left of central. If all goes as projected, AAR will move to 1360 AM sometime early next month. The present popular format of Adult Standards is expected to sign-off. KPOP radio has a larger, loyal listening audience, so Stay Tuned. Meanwhile, the talk-network featuring Al Franken, Randi Rhodes, and others, is slowly making its mark across the country. San Diego is crucial to the success of AAR, a staff member of the company said, and we will be the alternative voice. In a jab that recognizes Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh, SDR was told, “We will sanitize the airwaves, and we welcome the rush of listeners. …. Stay Tuned.
The current site of what’s at 1360 AM is KPOP.
So I suppose we’ll know more in August if the normally conservative-radio town San Diego will have lefty Air America on the airwaves!

YES!!! It’s about time!!! I hope Air America blows the doors off of the right-wing extremistas who have been rammed down our throats all these years! Hopefully, Ed Schultz will be on also.

Air America in San Diego? Kudos to Clearchannel and KPOP. San Diego has THE worst radio broadcasting I’ve heard in any major metropolitan city ! KPOP could help to make this place more saavy !!! Thank you.

OK, Finally, Air America is coming to 1360, which will now be KLSD, starting Monday. Clear Channel issued a press release about it. The new website is 1360klsd.com. Maybe you could make a new post about it?

Wow, we are getting Lionel back!
Unlike the rest of the lineup he is a skilled radio broadcaster and a libertarian.

I am a senior in my mid seventies. I am of jewish decent. I heard Al Franken (who I have always admired) in the car this morning and was disappointed by his Oiy Vey comments. I think it will be detrimental to his broadcast. I think the use of Yiddish is sometimes useful and colorful and use many terms myself and my children do too. However I beleive San Diego and many other places may find that he over does it and it’s offensive. He must realize that he is not brodcasting to Booklyn, the Bronx or South Fla. exclusively. I’m looking forward to many more of his programs.

So liberal talk-radio has come to San Diego (good luck). I am a proud
Republican conservative, a big Rush and Sean Hannity fan also, and I
say welcome to the new KLSD. More people need to hear what the
liberals are saying. I think we’ll have more conservatives then.
John Deegan said on Monday, August 23, 2004, 16:11
Oh my God! Just when I thought of leaving San Diego because I was so sick of hearing Sean Insanity, your radio station appears. I am going to go on a major campaign to get you lots of listeners!
oso said on Monday, August 23, 2004, 16:19
Good point Suzanne. Though I’m a liberal I always like reading conservative publications to hear the other side. I wish more people would do the same.

KLSD is a joke. They have completely decimated the programming the schedule. They have bumped every show except Franken and Rhodes. They grabbed a bunch of right wing local personalities from KOGO and call it Progressive radio. This is a freaking joke. I’m starting a letter writing campaign tonight! Please join me!
Wally said on Tuesday, August 24, 2004, 14:42
Wow, who chose the kLSD call letters? FAR OUT, MAN! I’m, sure it will be a “hit” with many of your listeners, if they don’t foget to “tune in”
It will probably last as long as Imus did on the ‘New K-1040″.
My only questioni is whether Mark Larson’s move to KOGO forced Stacy Taylor out or if Stacy made the worst career move possible on his own.
Bill Tapp said on Tuesday, August 24, 2004, 17:50
I guess KLSD’s new format is about all we coule hope for in the way of progressive/liberal broadcasting in SD. Stacy Taylor seems extremely uncomfortable in “pretending” to be liberal and Marilyn Heider is just plain lame. Too bad that the station couldn’t put on a real liberal voice in the AM to kickoff the day. Like I said, it’s better thasn nothing but a little disappointing.

What a breath of fresh air KLSD is(which stands for Liberal San Diego) after all the years of the conservative hijack of talk radio. Great lineup. Does Ed Schultz sound like Rush to anyone else (until you hear he’s ripping Bush a new one.) As a liberal beer drinking Packer fan, he is an unexpected and welcome surprise. Lionel, Randy Rhodes, Franken are also just great! As to the comment above about Stacy Taylor, I always felt he felt he needed to get more conservative to work and wasn’t all that comfortable with it (like years ago when Joe Crummy had to go to the desert and come back conservative to stay on KFI (didn’t work.) So, I think the Stacy on KLSD is closer to his real politics than what you used to hear.

Yeeeee! Its about time that Air America is in San Diego. We have been waiting!
Thank YOU 1360 KLSD
Jake said on Monday, August 30, 2004, 14:21
In reference to Mr. Schaeffer’s comments, I hope you will keep listening. Franken’s use of the “Oy vey” comment is part of a daily bit. It’s a way of getting out, in quick fashion, some of the awful things the Bush Administraion is up do. I don’t think it is meant to offend. I love it, personally.
And, in reference to another poster, I don’t understand the lineup either. The only shows from AAR that they are carrying live are Morning Sedition (in the middle of the night) and Franken. Randi Rhodes, which is a caller driven show, is tape delayed and short an hour. I understand that they want to have her on during drive time, but having it tape delayed means people can’t call in to interact with the show.
If they just plugged into AAR’s programming, and got rid of the local hacks, then The Majority Report with Sam Seder and Janeanne Garafalo would be on during drive time. That is the PERFECT show for drive time because you have a well knon name to help ratings, and, quite honestly, it’s the best show on AAR!
I’ve called in to the station to first thank them for the format switch and bringing an alternate voice to the relentless conservativism on our airwaves, and then to plead with them to carry more AAR programming, and carry it live!
I encourage all to do the same!

Thanks for giving me something else to listen to
besides the right wing ninnies that are making my
blood pressure boil over. One thing though, this
station does not come in great all day in the North
County. Please kick it up a notch!

KLSD- the call letters are SO appropriate to the target audience! Hippies solving all the worlds problems under the influence!
Mark Holmes said on Wednesday, October 20, 2004, 21:58
I can’t agree that KLSD is a “breath of fresh” air. In my opinion, two wrongs don’t make a right. Just because right-wing radio has a load of mindless shock-jocks spreading half truths and unresearched rumors doesn’t mean the liberal element should do the same. I’ve listened to Air America. It does nothing to further the cause of the liberals and only makes them look as stupid as the right-wing radio stations they are immitating. Thank heaven for NPR and the BBC!
oso said on Thursday, October 21, 2004, 19:23
I completely agree with you Mark.

SHE IMMEDIATELY TOLD THE WORKER THERE, WHO SAID OTHERS HAD COMPLAINED ABOUT THE SAME THING. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE WATCH YOUR BALLOT AND RE-CHECK IT AFTER YOU VOTE!!!!

Air America. What a joke ,its not even self sustaining, its being proped up by some wealthy liberal who feels guilty about all the people hes screwed in his life(fact ,and you all know who im talking about.look it up.). I predict this station will last about two months, like in other cities it broadcasted in. The hate ,whineing, and just bashing the USA is what will do it in.I do believe it still broadcasts in Frisco and Chicago.Wont be long at it will be on NPR.
