Our bayfront convention center has been dubbed America’s finest, in case you were comparing the nation’s major meeting venues. Independent Watkins Research in Kansas City and a bunch of meeting planners say San Diego is top notch for facilities, safety, free-time activities, and city accessibility. According to the Union-Tribune, the city hosted 70 large conventions in the last fiscal year — a huge bang for the economy here. The competition is intense for sure. Some events are booked 20 years in advance.

The Convention Center is great, and the architecture is intriguing, but who would have thought it’s the best around? Now that they’re glowing from the high marks, maybe the powers that be can work on parking and traffic. Even medium-sized events clog the roads. It’s quite possible the center’s parking facilities don’t really exist, because they’re always blocked off with an orange-vested wand-waver and a “Lot Closed” sign.

And now that an idea of a new Chargers stadium on 10th Avenue has been beaten and buried, the Convention Center is eyeing some expansion space.

But there’s no expansion in time for Comic Con and its 82,000 visitors. OMG! Eliza Dushku is coming to town!
