Interviewing San Diego: Chuck Hartley

Chuck been blogging since 2001 and writes about his faithful companion Pongo, his life, his thoughts, the law, and everything else. He has a laid-back style that seems at odds with his profession. He’s a lawyer. But don’t let that fool you, Chuck rocks. Last year he blogged about a diagnosis that was pretty scary. Chuck continued blogging, and remains a great read.

Blog Birthday:

May 12, 2001

Why do you blog?

It was a place to vent, ramble, and spout off at a time when my life was going through a lot of changes and I was losing touch with a lot of my real life contacts. My job was being eliminated (or I was being eliminated from my firm, a question of perspective I guess) and I was moving somewhere (uncertain at the time, but ended up in San Diego). It also seemed like a simple way to expand the site and make it a bit more dynamic.

What do you talk about?

My life, a bit about politics and law, my dog.

What don’t you talk about? Why?

Sexual positions and partners. Words don’t do it justice and this isn’t a photo blog. Also the privacy issues and the fact that my parents are aware of the site necessitate a bit of discretion.

Worst or best experience regarding something you wrote in your blog?

Best experience is a close tie between the support received from readers and fellow-bloggers when Pongo was mauled in 2002 and my cancer was diagnosed in 2003.

Worst experience would have to be some pretty hate-filled comments, both posted and e-mailed, I’ve received in response to political posts. There are some awfully close-minded people out there, especially those who think they know and understand me based on one post.

Favorite and worst thing about living in San Diego?

Favorite thing would have to be the weather and recreational opportunities. Worst would be the traffic.

If you were president of the US:

We’d abandon the District of Columbia in a heartbeat and move the capital someplace where people can enjoy living.

What actor would play you in the movie of your life?

Anthony Edwards

Favorite color:

Blue.

Favorite food:

Strawberry cheesecake

When you were 10, what did you want to do when you grew up?

Astronaut

What are your hobbies?

Swimming, Pongo and the sites (howlingpoint.net and beachlaw.info)

What do you want to tell other bloggers?

Don’t let it cause you stress. Do it because you enjoy it, and if it stops being fun find something else to do.

Thanx, Chuck!

You’re welcome. On a side note, am I still a lawyer if I’ve tried to quit? Maybe I should have “recovering attorney” non-business cards printed up.
