Tattoos on San Diego police officers are going undercover
The police chief in the nation’s seventh-biggest city is cracking down on his own officers’ tattoos.
Effective Wednesday, San Diego police officers with “excessive” body art must cover it up with long sleeves or turtlenecks while on the job. Hot summer temperatures won’t be an excuse.
Huh. Are we that conservative a city that we don’t believe a cop can have tattoos?
Or do we have such an inflated regard about police that we don’t think they would have tattoos?
Need a job? Here are the requirements for becoming a member of the San Diego Police Department. No word on tats.

Joe, it’s not about being conservative, it’s about projecting a professional look that commands the respect of the citizens he/she will see on the beat.
Take a look at this photo I took 2 years ago at some street fair in North Park. This guy won’t be going undercover anytime soon.

Great illustration of the issue MAS!
The paradox is that I think people don’t think tattoos are that big a deal — I mean, teenybopper girls all seem to have that lower back tattoo — and plenty of very straitlaced people have tattoos. It just seems like something that wouldn’t need to be codified into policy. :-\

USMC has a new rule againts tats that are visible. Basically anything that can be seen while you’re in shorts and a T is prohibited.
