There is so much to say about what’s going on politically in this state that I decided to sidestep it entirely and tell you all something more important.
Every second Saturday night there is an event called Ray At Night. There are about 10 or so art galleries along Ray street in North Park that open their doors from 6 to 9 pm. They have quite a variety of work to show and our hosts, JJ and Joey, told us that they rarely see a repeat of work. They might have seen the same artist from one month to the next but it’s almost always new work.
We saw everything from basic geometrical acrylics that were pretty unexciting with the exception of one piece that incorporated some earth tones and larger and fewer shapes, to really warped sex stuff that I could totally have lived the rest of my life without seeing. I’m sure some people liked it and I’m not knocking it. I just personally didn’t need to see it.
I particularly liked the pieces by Charles Bibbs and Pamela Jaeger.
Bibbs has a fluidity to his work that is amazing. I found myself wanting to just keep looking. And looking. I think I’d like to watch him work.
Jaeger’s art is more Holly Hobbie and her Precious Moments friends meet Winona Ryder’s character Lydia in Beetlejuice. I loved looking at her images. I couldn’t find her on the web. She needs more exposure! Contact me, Pamela, and I’ll hook you up.
Anyway, JJ and Joey were very patient with us as we followed along behind them and dripped about 3 gallons from our foreheads. (It was hot, ok?)
Next month, if anyone wants to get together first, Joe and I should have a place to meet. I’ll keep you posted.

It’s awesome, isn’t it? And I can’t believe I’ve lived my whole life without Charles Bibbs…..
How did I do it?

[...] Last August Leah wrote a piece about Ray at Night, a great event that happens in North Park of San Diego. Well, the North County Times - has a new article about just that topic, and it captures it pretty well. Tiny Ray Street in North Park has become a mecca for studios and artists, and each second Saturday they hold what is billed as San Diego’s largest monthly art event: Ray at Night. [...]
