Wi-Fi in Downtown

A strange thing happened on Friday after I booted my laptop in the conference room - instead of logging into the wireless network our radio engineers had set up last year, the machine automatically found at least three Wi-Fi access points I could log on to: “Leslie,” “WITHOUT_WIRES,” and another creatively christened “Linksys.”

It turns out that the building I work at, One America Plaza just implemented a property-wide 802.11b network for visitors and tenants. Now instead of having to go to the downstairs Starbucks and shell out some scratch for the privilege of checking your e-mail, all you have to do now is find a nice comfortable place to sit and boot up…. as long as your laptop is enabled.

The really cool thing is that it’ll even be available in the parking levels. Now the guys that wash the cars on P2 can surf for their porn WIRELESSLY.

Progress.

Wow, what a cool building!
I recently fired up a WiFi nic in my apartment and detected 2 different nets! One was closed and the other was open — WAY open. They have a linksys to share their cable, but they had left the password as the default. I didn’t mess with any settings, but one should always change the default password!

I’ve done some wardriving with macstumbler to good effect. I’ve also surfed at LeStats’s in Normal Heights, and also at The Living Room in Hillcrest (for pay — cafe.com) and also for free in Little Italy on the LittleItalyWireless network.

Nifty cool!
